Best Enemies
Hello b_eople!

What begins? Oh my dear b_eople, like it says on the tin, we are going to watch ALL OF WHO. YES ALL OF IT. FROM THE BEGINING.

How that will work:

* EVERYONE is welcome! DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED--most of us have not seen most of these! Drop in or out as you like! This is just a rare opportunity to get to grips with the show's canon!

* We're going to have to double up short serials and split up long ones. So: something like Edge of Destruction will get cobbled onto another week or split down the middle and done doubly (so Carry On today, sorry), and something like The War Games gets made a two-week event.

* This will ALWAYS be at 8pm BST/GMT on a Sunday, as this is not godawful for Europe or Australia, is doable for the UK, and hits all the US time-zones. Is this a problem for you? Please let me know, and if enough people are inconvenienced, we'll try and find something more workable.

* As you may know, some One and Two only exists in parts or has been fully destroyed, save for the audio. The main body of chat will skip these unless a full reconstruction with animation is readily available. The plan for the semi-destroyed ones is to host watchalongs either at midweek, Saturday during the day or Sunday beforehand (There Will Be Blood/Polls when it comes to it: we'll poll re: the FIRST lost ep to establish a definite fixed policy). Where we've missed an ep or several, we'll spend ten min or so before the Watchalong discussing what went down Last Time to the extent it's important/people feel like it.

* REMINDER: I know a new series is on, but please keep any and all chat about it in #bespoilered. It's just polite. :)

* There will be a scheduled monthly Skip Ahead--not at the regular watchalong time, but before or something (again, there will be a poll, and again, we'll poll re: the FIRST Skip Ahead to establish a definite fixed policy). This will be a Three or Five ep or some such (we can try and limit the Skip Aheads to D/M stuff that's WELL ahead), so it's not A YEAR OF BLACK AND WHITE WITH NO RELIEF EVERRRRRRR (well, 17 complete One!serials and 6 complete Two!serials, so 23 weeks/half a year (54 weeks)). When we get to the skip-ahead eps in their actual chronology, the Skip Aheads get rewatched--they're popular eps, and we're talking YEARS in advance, here given how long we expect it to take to get through early Doctors.

* We WILL continue onto New Who. If we haven't all died by then. THEN MAYBE AUDIOS, which by then will be downloaded directly into every household's animatronic Nick Briggs (WOULD YOU LIKE SOME TEEEEEA?).

What Else We Will Do For These To Keep It Scintillating:

* A reminder post so people who find downloading more convenient than streaming have time to make that happen.
* Drinking games/food themes
* Drabble/Sketch challenges: Put The Master In It, Make It Shippy, or Whatever, Link Us Your Gen
* Larger regular fic/art-challenges: see above. Details re: the art component TBA after I talk to your new Art Mod. If the first was sketch/drabble, as long as you want, this is a round up every month or two of longer/more substantial fic and art projects based on/inspired by these eps. Possibly with additionally guiding prompts. More on this later.
* A Discussion Post where people can talk about the episode on lj. If they can't make chat or chose not to, that is NO PROBLEM, you are equally a part of this and encouraged to participate in all other ways.
* Amusing recaps/reviews linked to/posted on said Discussion Post. I'll try to get one out weekly, and would relish tons!

marah_sarie is always thinking of you, because the restraining orders you have taken out cannot stop her powerful mind. When we first floated this on the Mod Com back in September, she very sensibly pointed out that some people might look askance (like so: :/ ) at such a flurry of not explicitly pairing activity. We should explain to you that this shit is so pairing-related it's not true! This shit stops being gen and starts being real.

It is hard to get into Old Who alone, yet interesting and inspirational to know your canon. This will be fun and useful in many ways.

* More One!influenced Theta, anyone?
* More Who you've never seen?
* More crazy cracky or dead serious fic/art/craft-spurring watchalongs and challenges (in the 'Put The Master In It ('Put the master in it' is one of my favorite games./ That is what he said...'), Make It Shippy, or Whatever, Link Us Your Gen' vein)?
* More hanging out with peeps?
* More stuff to read/look at as a result?

It could be cool. WE WILL KEEP IT SHIPPY, FOR THAT IS HOW WE ROLL. If you're not digging it, you can easily ignore it, that is fine! These *particular* activities will just /also/ be About The Classic Love (and Knowledge): the creation and maintenance thereof.

* We'll be limiting strictly episode-watch posts to the Reminder and Discussion Posts if possible.
* Other related posts will be for quite pairing-related fic and art producing stuffs, like the drabble/sketch and the overarching!challenges.

I'd like to keep this on b_e to keep it properly communal, to share the love and the resultant work, but if it gets unmanagable, let me know and I'll think about creating a sub-com.

There are 215 serials. Only 27 of them have been destroyed. At a serial a week (though we may speed up as serials get shorter) that's four years, y'all. Individuals are 100% free to come and go as they please, catch up on their own time, or come in and ask what's going on without pressure. It's only a long term commitment for the com, but also, it's something for us to do as a com, for like YEARS. Challenging, but I have real faith that this will produce excellent discussion and fanwork.

I'm looking forward y'all making frankly BALLER classic fic and art, watching stuff I've never seen, and the pleasure of writing snarky reviews!

Hurray! So glad this is finally happening. Black and white Who needs so much more love.
10th-May-2011 02:44 am (UTC)
I like this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it! I've never participated in one of these watchalong/chat things before. :D
10th-May-2011 02:58 am (UTC)
Oh man, excited about your excitement, welcome aboard!
10th-May-2011 03:04 am (UTC)
:o That's rather daunting. I do need to get caught up on my black and white Who though... XD
10th-May-2011 03:09 am (UTC)
Yesssss, jooooooiiiiiin us. Come to second level...
10th-May-2011 02:21 pm (UTC)
Though, I suppose it means if I end up in China or South Korea, I'm going to be screwed time wise, but still.
10th-May-2011 03:14 am (UTC) - *Sighs* Can't Wait
Till I'm 18. I guess the usual chat rules apply?

Oh well. It's not that long, only 11 weeks (just calculated that now because I want to know how much I'm going to miss).

I'll admit that the time is horrible (being 7:00am on a Monday, so school) but if I can, I'll be around. How does it work? am I likely to be able to view on a school computer, do you think? We aren't allowed to download anything, but I can watch things on Youtube and DailyMotion.

Still, this is a great idea, I've been hoping that there will still be watchalongs once I'm old enough for chat. and I'm very, very pleased that there'll be one on such an immense scale (we'll be at this for years).
10th-May-2011 03:16 am (UTC) - Re: *Sighs* Can't Wait
Goodness, where are you that it's 7am at 8pm BST?
10th-May-2011 03:28 am (UTC) - Re: *Sighs* Can't Wait
I'm in New Zealand.

Specifically, Wellington.

We're 13 hours ahead of Britain.
10th-May-2011 03:18 am (UTC) - Re: *Sighs* Can't Wait
Dailymotion also has good streaming links you could watch with no downloading.
10th-May-2011 03:31 am (UTC) - Re: *Sighs* Can't Wait
Cool. That's good, turns out I have Study first on a Monday, so I'm available for a fair bit of the morning until 9:30, minus time to get to school etc. This might actually be somewhat workable for me. Especially if I can stay somewhat ahead in my own time.
10th-May-2011 03:57 am (UTC) - Re: *Sighs* Can't Wait
It's wrong how smug I was as soon as I saw what time it would be for you and went 'Kiwi'. Of course, I have to get up even earlier, so maybe I should rethink this ....

Still, best birthday present or what? THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN IT WILL BE AWESOME TO HAVE YOU THERE. We will drink in your honour! Maybe even create a drink in your honour? Who knoooowwwss. It's a magical mystery tour! Of alcoholism! And gay pr0nz. Just the thing to get you up in the morning.
10th-May-2011 07:15 am (UTC) - Re: *Sighs* Can't Wait
Nah its not wrong, I felt just as smug as soon as I read your comment and went 'Aussie' (5:00am is not too early for Who, you must come play).

And yeah, wake up on my birthday, straight into 'The Rescue', life will be good. I've heard so much about these watchalongs that I can barely wait, but I'll be good. Unfortunately, I won't be drinking because I can imagine just how unimpressed my teachers would be if I showed up smelling of alcohol. But you lot can drink, and I will happily watch the gay pr0nz.
10th-May-2011 08:04 am (UTC) - Re: *Sighs* Can't Wait
Alas!! poor Kiwi. BUT you can still keep up re: discussion posts and everything! YOU COULD POST THE HELL OUT OF THAT DISCUSSION!! I think a lot of people aren't going to be chat-inclined but might still be following along/want to talk about it pre: pronz production.
10th-May-2011 03:22 am (UTC)
This is exactly what I have been wanting! *is very happy*
10th-May-2011 03:23 am (UTC)
Good because if you'd wanted 'a puppy' you'd have been out of luck. This? I can do.
10th-May-2011 03:22 am (UTC)
*is wicked excited about the Watchalong of Rassilon*
10th-May-2011 03:23 am (UTC)
10th-May-2011 03:46 am (UTC)
It's like a whopocolypse. Of which I wholeheartedly endorse, this is the way I wanted to die-- sitting in bed, begging failymotion to load.
10th-May-2011 08:06 am (UTC)
...yeah maybe we should try and download and provide a LOT of alternative links. /maybe/. Failymotion with EVERYONE on it: not pretty.
11th-May-2011 01:24 am (UTC)
You: "Everybody ready?"

Me (in the background, weakly): "No..."
10th-May-2011 06:34 am (UTC)
I feel like I should make some dramatic pronouncement right before we start, like a sailor heading out to sea for years on end. I can't think what though. I'm just so stoked about this!
10th-May-2011 08:07 am (UTC) - Really Shit Odyssey

*years later*

10th-May-2011 06:53 am (UTC)
:DD I could skip right from DS9 rewatch to Doctor Who rewatch! I could never get any homework done EVER. Awesome. (Since I've watched up to about halfway through Four, though, I'm probably only going to show up for serials I really like, i.e. The Romans. I love One and Two, just not enough to go through ALL the serials again =/)
10th-May-2011 08:09 am (UTC)
Yeah, fair. Katy and I are currently watching (re for me) ALL OF TNG, so in a similar position. NO HOMEWORK EVER GRADSCHOOL WHAT GRADSCHOOL?!
10th-May-2011 07:30 am (UTC)
My excitement can only be expressed through the medium of the graphics interchange format!

10th-May-2011 08:09 am (UTC)
10th-May-2011 08:11 am (UTC)
I cannot stop laughing at the Dalek one. I CANNOT.
10th-May-2011 08:10 am (UTC)
Mayhaps I might--if the day be right and the errands be slight.

And also if I'm not in Ye Olde Land of Diale-Up, where everything is difficult and made of Pony Express stamps.

Also, why I felt the need to rhyme in the first sentence is unfathomable even to me. I apologize.
10th-May-2011 08:14 am (UTC)
Dial up?! DIAL UP!?!?!??!?!?!? I am making ALL the horrified faces. WHY DO YOU LIVE IN 1859?!?
(Deleted comment)
10th-May-2011 10:01 am (UTC)
Ohgod, this is the WORST conspiracy theory.
(Deleted comment)
10th-May-2011 10:12 am (UTC)
Yeah somehow all the flooding and drinking one's own urine is not *quite* as bleak as No Internet Ever.
10th-May-2011 10:12 am (UTC)
It is TRUE! I saw it in a British newspaper! (Okay, it might have been the Sun or something...)

10th-May-2011 10:19 am (UTC)
What would we even do, in crazy!probably-not-that-real-of-a-threat!Sun!predictions!world? WE CAN'T GO BACK TO ZINES, IT WOULD MAKE

Oh, oh man, try /my professor/, try her being brought in to lecture, and try my entire grad school term papery thing for that course being a delicate and well crafted 'fuck yoooooooou.' Pain. Pretension. Bad research. Her being IN THE ROOM for lecture AND DISCUSSION so we couldn't even talk about her wickety-wack. It was the. worst.

I live in 1859 because all the men wear fancy suits and top hats all the time. ;-)

But it may as well could be 1859 where I occasionally am; the roads are made of washed-out gravel and there's an Amish community nearby. The only way TV works without a satellite is with rabbit ears (for serious!). You can't even find the place on Google Maps.

But I'm not there all the time, so I'm only in 1859 for a short while. :-)
10th-May-2011 10:14 am (UTC)
YAY. Am super-excited about watching B/W era stuff, because that is always funnest as watchalong.
10th-May-2011 10:17 am (UTC)
Those Sensorites and Susan Is A Giant Telepath were particularly great. And the UNSPEAKABLY BAD Gunfighters Songs of Exposition? Be still my heart. Not since Star Trek: The Original Series have I known such western!cheese love.
10th-May-2011 05:11 pm (UTC)
It just occurred to me that the first serial with Nicholas Courtney (and I think the first ones with the Brigadier) are among those of the destroyed. When (not if) we get to those, may I suggest making them a special case? I'm not sure if those have been reconstructed, but it's the Brigadier. Who doesn't adore him?
10th-May-2011 05:13 pm (UTC)
Well, we WILL have watch-alongs for the destroyed that still exist in at least audio versions (just not at this main time), and the second of the Brig's outings with Two is preserved in full animated form, so we'll be watching that?
10th-May-2011 05:18 pm (UTC)
I suppose that will have to do. XD
10th-May-2011 05:26 pm (UTC)
How are we going to watch the old episodes? Most of them aren't online. I've looked.
10th-May-2011 05:28 pm (UTC)
They all are? We'll do links prior to the watchalong in a more secure format, but I'd advise you to google search 'dailymotion' with specific serial titles like 'unearthly child'.
10th-May-2011 05:31 pm (UTC)
Dailymotion has the answer to your needs!
10th-May-2011 06:28 pm (UTC)
I know that a favorite uploader of episodes on dailymotion just had some of their stuff taken down, but other people have the episodes up too.

* More One!influenced Theta, anyone?

THIS! I've read lots of Theta/Koschei fic and few of it takes into account that Theta is One, instead characterizing him as a pure innocent that always wanted to save the world. After reading a lot of that, yeah, I'm practically crying out for more One!Theta.

Also, I've already started watching Classic, and am on a different ep at the moment, but I could do this, probably.
