A Cosmos Without Doctor/Master Scarcely Bears Thinking About
I've Got A Little List

Best Enemies
* Earlier this year someone made the comment somewhere or other that the diasporic nature of fandom and posting means snippets of our work are everywhere, and can be difficult for readers to find. She suggested that we sort of owed it to ourselves and readers to collect all that together. Archiving doesn't float my personal boat, because I like things being tied to the communities and pages that occasioned their creation and the community-building functions of livejournal, et al., and because sometimes the aesthetics or the set-ups of particular archives don't do it for me, in terms of usability. Nevertheless I recognize that archiving is great at preserving and centrally storing work. It's a shame when work that isn't FRESH THIS VERY MINUTE!! gets buried and never read/commented on by people who might really enjoy it. With that in mind, I think it'd be great if people who had Master Lists of their fanwork could comment below with links to those lists, and if people who don't currently have them could think about knocking them up! Also why not update your Master List to make it more inclusive? I thought mine was basically fine, until I was sitting here tonight wincing as I had to add fic from August 2009... yeah...

* In this vein, I'm also investigating a linking system like norsekink's Delicious set up. This would allow us to have a central archiving system with tags that make sense for our needs (in a way Teaspoon's sorting system sometimes doesn't, by its nature). It would also preserve the context of fics (and thus promote commenting/interaction via the lj format), not necessitate uploading, and allow for both some centralized stat gathering (what's more popular, and to what extent?) and the provision of additional information about a fic you might be interested in (see the norsekink delicious's non-pairing tags). I don't think it'd annoy people because it wouldn't be hosting without express permission, it'd just be linking to something they put up on their own terms (but linking in an organized fashion)? I'd like to use it for the kink meme and for D/M fic generally. The issues I see are:

a) Delicious has recently had a big old falderal about the '/', and I'm not sure where they are with that (these tags seem fine?),
b) the sweeping changes the company pushed through overnight on tagging indicate they're less fandom-savy/friendly than lj (grim indeed), and thus that they might do something similar again and render a lot of work useless,
c) it would be just that--a lot of work, and I might have to call upon others, a la the Tagging Brigade initiative, to help me out.

Do people who know more about Delicious have any thoughts?

* Lastly, I thought it might be fun to combine the posting of your Master Lists with a bit of a meme, if you are so inclined. Answer as many of the below as tickle your fancy:

What did you write that you would never have predicted?
What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Story most under appreciated by the universe?
Story that could have been better?
Sexiest story?
Most fun story?
Story with single sweetest moment?
The story that made you cry?
Hardest story to write?
Easiest story to write?
Most overdue story?
Did you take any writing risks? What did you learn from them?
Do you have any fanfic goals?

Mine is here!
2nd-Feb-2012 01:56 am (UTC) - Meme Part I
What did you write that you would never have predicted?

Maybe Supreme Courtship, because it's so frigging weird and can only possibly appeal to maybe 4 people ever including me (and even that is dicey). Or The Moment Has Been Prepared For, because *Four in a sexual situation what what nooooo*.

What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Crane Wife is one of the only things I've ever written that I look back on and think, that's solid. I think a good portion of that's probably the existence of a podfic, which lets me look on it as something distinct, almost as though someone else wrote it. Weirdly it's not comparatively popular, despite being, I think almost objectively, the best thing I've written for the pairing.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

Maybe Killing the Groundhog, which I wrote so fast and such a while ago it feels as though it's not mine, and I almost kind of resent its popularity.

Story most under appreciated by the universe?

Crane Wife, I guess? Idk, this q seems kinda entitled.

Story that could have been better?

Lots. Spoiled for Choice is the glaring one, and I'll never finish it unless I revise it from the ground up (which I probably won't do). It's sort of embarrassing? I can see what I wanted to do, and I think it was necessary to write my way through it and into how I'd work later on, but god, I made some naff choices.

Final Game as well--supposed to have a sequel I never finished, the sex is unearned. Imaginary Worlds b/c the v.g. remix made me realize what breezy tosh I'd written.

Sexiest story?

Hrm. Crane Wife & What Rassilon. I used to say that Three/Delgado!Master was the pairing I loved most, but Five/Ainley!Master was the sexiest--now I'm not sure, that feels off to me. I feel like I'd like to write some good compelling and sexy Eight and Six, and some more Three.

Most fun story?

Maybe Five Times Brax.

Story with single sweetest moment?

Idk that I do sweet moments so much. I do regrettably saccharine and attempt to do big emotional moments?

The story that made you cry?

...what? None. Pft.

Hardest story to write?

Really not sure. I want to say recent ones that just *would not* be edited into submission and ended up being kind of hopeful monsters, or early ones in which my various betas and I (before I settled into primarily working with Katy, and sometimes with Nadja or Jon for various projects) didn't know each other well, and we wanted stories to go in radically different directions. That's always a bit raising cats--no one's /wrong/, you're just not helping each other as you should be because your primary loyalties are with your own contested vision rather than to the potentialities of this given piece. Never good.

Editing the Radiosonic plays has been REALLY challenging--often very rewarding, but length, new format, people I haven't edited before, each with their own editing styles and craft issues, admin duties on top of that--that has been a *huge* learning experience, and I wouldn't be surprised if I'm a better writer and editor now than I was some months ago. Of course my MA has also occupied this past year, and has probably changed how I write and think, but I'm not sure it was necessarily for the better.

Easiest story to write?

Maybe stuff like Final Game, which I wrote in a week/edited/posted, and Groundhog, which I wrote in a day. When I know what I'm doing, I'm fast. Balzac!fast.

Most overdue story?

I guess the rest of Let No Man (which I'd want to edit hard, that first chapter is surprisingly sloppy compared to the antecedent CW). I've got an entire arc for it planned in considerable detail, with many written scenes, snatched and notes. And yet. Also my Shalka script.

here's some i made earlier (it's like you told me you were going to do this, or something).

my fanfic list on LJ (split into doctor/master and not doctor master).
also available on teaspoon, Ao3, and (though i'm not sure all of the fic is here) pryadonian
i prefer LJ - though i realise my font is a bit small and you might prefer to go elsewhere.

my podfic

i can't really be bothered to answer the questions (sorry), but i will say that if you only read one of my fics i'd urge you to read 'sleepwalker', because it is my favourite at the moment/the one i am most invested in. i don't know what's the best.

if you only listen to one of my podfics - go for crane wife, by x_los, although the recording quality is piss poor. time lords made us do it by bagheera_san is also v good, in my opinion, and is also a lot shorter.
31st-Jan-2012 10:47 pm (UTC) - Re: MASTER LIST
To be fair, you already did them. :p
31st-Jan-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
Are we just doing fic or other fan work too like fan art, vids or what have you? Also for purpose of linking a list, does the list need be only doctor/master, do you want a separate thang' if that is not the only ship you write? Is linking to your D/M tag on Ao3 a cool thing to do? What about tumblr tags?
31st-Jan-2012 10:48 pm (UTC)
All fan works. No, other pairings are fine. That is also fine. That is also also fine.
31st-Jan-2012 10:59 pm (UTC) - MASTER LIST YA'LL
Ao3 Doctor/Master tag: http://archiveofourown.org/works?utf8=%E2%9C%93&selected_tags[tags][]=85602&selected_tags[tags][]=19510&language_id=&boolean_type=and&commit=Filter+Works&user_id=TARDIScrash

And I am crap about archiving drabbles and sketches but this is a pretty cool place to be if you like Ainley!Master, and my god why wouldn't you?

and eta because I'm waffling about finishing up the longest fic that ever longed.

What did you write that you would never have predicted? Oh, definitely the Five/Ainley tentacle fic. I'm alway surprised at how not actually horrible that is

What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. I think the thing I'm writing now but out of my D/M fics that's a tie between the cheetah fic and Transposed Values. Both actually had something of a plot to them and weren't just about people talking at each other and having feelings.

Okay, NOW your most popular story. I have no idea, The five bot fics get a lot of love and I still get asked about when I'm going to write more. I feel bad that I have this big long story for him in my head and I never seem to be in the mood to put it down. Especially now that Marvel hijacked my brain.

Story most under appreciated by the universe? My lovely little Five Nyssa fic. Also the Five/Abby. Of D/M stuff. Planet Bollywood. Totally. I mean there are dance fights! You can't beat that.

Story that could have been better? Ffff all of them.

Sexiest story? I don't know. I can't tell.

Most fun story? Bollywood.

Story with single sweetest moment? I love the kiss at the end of Transposed Values.

The story that made you cry? The one I am working on now, a few times I had to stop because I just... yeah. I don't normally get emotionally connected to what I'm writing but yeah, it really hurt to push the characters as far as I did. I've never come close to that with any thing before. It was also sort of sadistically satisfying.

Hardest story to write? The River/Eleven and Eight/Charley I did for a xmas thing. I was happy with it in the end.

Easiest story to write? And of the cute fluffy ones, that stuff is just like knee jerk. Insert prompt; receive cute.

Most overdue story? Five bot stuff if my ask box is any indication.

Did you take any writing risks? What did you learn from them? Current project. So many characters, locations, plot heavy, lots of tech stuff. It's just mad, I don't even know. I feel like a whole different writer after working on it.

Do you have any fanfic goals? Making fics that you could read and enjoy even if you are not too familiar with the source but aren't over loaded and bored if you do. Something that stands on it's own.

31st-Jan-2012 11:40 pm (UTC) - Master List
I've got one here, that has most all of my fics... the ones I'll admit to, anyway. There's a few from my ff.net account that I didn't transfer to lj, but I tend to not want to think about those ones. There's a lot of non-DW stuff on there too.

Hm... I answered those questions for last year's writing here, but I'll work in some of my fics from previous years in the answers?

What did you write that you would never have predicted?
Explict sex. That's pretty much the same answer. ^_^;;

What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
So there's the answer I had before, but I think one of my favorite fics I've ever written was A Far Off Memory. It's not a Doctor Who fic, but it's one that I thought pulled together everything that was both right and wrong about Weiß Kreuz Glühen's ending.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
God, do I have to answer this one? here. *runs away in shame* Still my most popular and most (personally) hated fic.

Story most under appreciated by the universe?
My original answer for this one works fairly well...

Story that could have been better?

Sexiest story?
Definitely ditto.

Most fun story?
Either the Master and Mrs. Pond or Stray Cat Blues (non-DW).

Story with single sweetest moment?
Same as my original answer, I guess?

The story that made you cry?
This chapter (non DW) is the one and only time I've ever cried while writing fic. And then after about five minutes I went right on tormenting the characters with absolutely no regret.

Hardest story to write?
I think my original answer fits that one...

Easiest story to write?
Far Off Memory, if just because I actually don't remember writing it? I just found it under my bed in my hand writing, so it's the easiest thing I've ever (remembered) writing! XD

Most overdue story?
Probably my next installment of the Mrs. Pond stories. It's taking so long to write. T_T

Did you take any writing risks? What did you learn from them?
Do you have any fanfic goals?

See previous answers.

Damn straight. I'm waiting for it to appear one day in my inbox. 0_0

I'll comment just as soon as I have the fics I'm finishing up on my fic LJ. :)

Excellent! :)
31st-Jan-2012 11:42 pm (UTC) - Master list!
Mine is at this lj post. I keep it pretty well updated - every three fics or so.

In terms of delicious, it's become increasingly difficult to use and search over the last couple months - they fixed the /, but the user interface got to the point where I couldn't make it work anymore, and I'm not sure if it's gotten any better. I finally broke down and bought a pinboard account, which has been really great but does have a one-time fee. I'm not sure what other options there are? I've been using the Ao3 more and more when searching for fics, but that's a different problem tan searching for masterlists and trying to keep it tied to the comm (which I totally understand).

Edited at 2012-01-31 11:44 pm (UTC)
1st-Feb-2012 04:03 am (UTC) - Re: Master list!
Pinboard: It's not too expensive--but like, can you have infinite things? Can multiple people edit it? With permission, or independently? Can they use the links for their own delicious style things easily? Can I have multiple profiles (i.e. could I have the fic bookmarks running on one and say, stuff I need for my research running on another)? Are the publicly viewable/searchable?

It's totally cool if you don't know these things, they're just the questions that sprang to mind that I don't really get a sense of from their Virtual Tour.

The importing might be useful b/c we could see who has a THOROUGH delicious account atm and port it onto here--or multiple people could add to an open delicious account and then we could import it, or we could come up with a dummy b_e email address (rather than like, me using mine) and have multiple collaborators to it via that. Hm.

Yeah, I like what Ao3 wants to do/the whole ethos of it, and it's not hideous, but I find it unwieldy and often difficult/exasperating, re: shit it warns for, how it sorts pairings, blah blah. And also there's that fundamental lack of community infrastructure. (I sort of feel similarly about dreamwidth, for different but not wholly dissimilar reasons.) Idk, archives feel very web 1.0 to me, and it seems sort of backward-looking to think about a mass migration back to them and that sort of content platform, when surely we should be meeting the challenge of lj's wtfery by doing something more progressive/dynamic? I'm not SURE what that is, but I don't want to lose the social-media-with-content thing we've got going on, and for me tumblr is all sm-no-c, and archives are no-sm, some-c (because the social quality generates dialogue/content, and I think in a world where fic is composed in a more isolated, non-conversational archive setting, the aesthetic quality and level of interactivity and progressive evolution will shift as well).

1st-Feb-2012 01:33 am (UTC) - master list
I've made a master list already, and more than happy to share. There's some other Who stuff here, but it's mostly Doctor/Master.

And, conveniently enough, I've already answered all them thar questions in the year-in-review meme that was floating around. Viz.:

I only got into fandom/fic-writing in late 2010, so pretty much everything I've written to date is in that year-in-review post.

Glad we're doing this. Hooray for master lists.
1st-Feb-2012 10:47 am (UTC) - Re: master list
1st-Feb-2012 02:43 am (UTC) - Master List!
Eeek, **terror face** uh, here's my Master List: http://narwhale-callin.livejournal.com/14693.html

What the hey, I'll do a meme. It means I avoid doing legitimate work.

What did you write that you would never have predicted?
Well, I sure didn't see that Dream Lord/Delgado!Master fic coming.

What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Probably "Ill Met By Moonlight" again. Just cause it's so different

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
"What's Dead and Buried" :D

Story most under appreciated by the universe?
***cough*** Probably my awkward Five/Master anon meme one. For good reason, though; it's not good at all.

Story that could have been better?
Probably all of them. But especially the older or unbetaed ones. :|

Sexiest story?
***cough*** Probably my awkward Five/Master anon meme one.

Most fun story?
"What's Dead and Buried" was SO fun. ALL THE HALLOWEEN CLICHES. ALL OF THEM.

Story with single sweetest moment?
Hmmmm......you know, it was probably "One Last Thing, Doctor." Even though it was a parody.

The story that made you cry?
I...don't cry over my own stories?

Hardest story to write?
"What's Dead and Buried," BY FAR is the winner. First Doctor voice is hard. Writing more than two characters is hard. Everything.

Easiest story to write?
I could cheat and say "all the drabbles," but that would be cheating. Actually, it might be "One of Mine" that was easiest for some reason. For reasons I'm not sure of.

Most overdue story?
A ha ha ha, probably the one still on hiatus.

Did you take any writing risks? What did you learn from them?
I feel like all of them were risks? Cause I was trying out something different each time? I think that's my answer. Basically all I keep learning is everything gets better with more practice.

Do you have any fanfic goals?
Haha, "write more fanfic."
1st-Feb-2012 02:46 am (UTC) - Re: Master List!
Hey, I liked the awkward Five/Master anon fill. <3
1st-Feb-2012 02:46 am (UTC)
I'm presuming you mean DW / TW only (I've never written SJA). Whether you are or not, luckily for whomever I'm a bit of a stickler about making a Table of Contents for my fics when they're not on sites with sorting capabilities.

The first entry of each GrittyFic is a TOC: LJ and DreamWidth. The DW site is just a mirror, and try as much as I have done to check everything, there may still be links that'll take you to an LJ page instead of the corresponding DW one.

Likewise I have a graphics site GrittyIcons on both LJ and DW. Unlike my fic sites, you have to use the tags (in the sidebar) to find things, and I've never checked to make certain that none of the DW entries lead back to the LJ site. Sorry.

I'm on Teaspoon as GRITS in Misery and also at the Pyrdonian Academy under the same name. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing on either site that isn't on my personal LJ/DW fic sites.

It's been so long since I've even gone through my fics that I'll give the meme a pass at the moment, except to warn folks that I do have three probably-never-to-be-finished WIPs posted. I stink at endings, and I never plot before I write. Bad GRITSy; no biscuit.
1st-Feb-2012 02:51 am (UTC)
Have I mentioned that I adore your icon? Because I do...
1st-Feb-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
A good reason to update my fic masterlist...
1st-Feb-2012 08:23 pm (UTC)
I feel like I should tell you that the whole reason I made an lj account in the first place was to use dw_ficsearch to find one of your stories that wasn't on your masterlist (but was in your fic tags, if I had thought to check).
2nd-Feb-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
I should be here: http://www.whofic.com/viewuser.php?uid=2675

I've a goodly number of D/M fics along with various others. :)
2nd-Feb-2012 01:12 am (UTC)
Excellent, thanks!
2nd-Feb-2012 03:34 am (UTC) - Master List and meme!
Aah, how come I miss all the awesome stuff?! A "Fatal Death" watchalong, hilarious prompts, spam-inspired fics...? ;_; I've been out of the loop!

Anyhoos, every fanfic I've ever written is on my FFN account here - mostly Doctor & Master genfic or Master-centric angst. Does this count as a masterlist?

And wheee, a meme! Righty-oh, let's see...

What did you write that you would never have predicted?
"One at a Time" - an anon meme response here, actually. Naked Doctors? Me? Nah, you're havin' me on...

What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
"Time and Time Again". My first Doctor Who fic, and I think still my favourite for plot and all the little things I put into it - commentary, symbols. Even though I know my actual writing has improved since then.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Mm, not sure how to define "most popular" - "Time and Time Again" has the most reviews overall, but it's also the oldest and longest. "For the Time Being: The Lodger" gets the most hits each month now, but "Time Out" has had the most reviews on a oneshot.

Story most under appreciated by the universe?
"Time After Time". A response to that 100 prompts table challenge on here a while back ("Broken") - wasn't commented on or acknowledged in later challenge posts on here, and while I did get some comments on FFN, I still have yet to find someone familiar with "He Jests At Scars" who actually gets the fic. *sigh* Ah well...

Story that could have been better?
"Time Flies", probably - I wrote it in a lecture, O.K.?

Sexiest story?
Oh, now here's a question I never thought I'd be able to answer! Buuut...now "Time Waits For No Woman" is all full of Jack Harkness and tender moments and innuendo in the form of Monopoly puns!

Most fun story?
Any of the "Bloopers" ones, I suppose - they're always so spontaneous, and I have so much fun with them.

Story with single sweetest moment?
Mm..."Keeping Time". There's a few moments like it, but maybe I'd pick the one in chapter 12 as top.
2nd-Feb-2012 03:35 am (UTC) - Master List and meme! part II
The story that made you cry?
"For the Time Being: The Pandorica Opens". Nothing to do with the story - just that my 10-year-old laptop died a final death when I was in the middle of it. Literally, pop, black screen, mid-sentence. X_X

Hardest story to write?
"Times Have Changed". Still wrestling with it. No Master this time.

Easiest story to write?
"Time After Time" again - not sure why. Sat down to write a drabble, and before I knew it, I was glued to the screen and pouring out a 3,000-word tragedy!

Most overdue story?
An un-uploaded third in a trilogy of "End of Time" AUs that was to go with "Time and Time Again" and "Keeping Time" - "Time Within Time", it's called. Had all three in my head ready to go from the evening after I saw "End of Time" on TV. I will finish it, one day...

Did you take any writing risks? What did you learn from them?
Ohh yes...where to start...? Had an OC in "Time and Time Again" - nearly chickened out and wrote him out altogether at one point, but decided at the last minute to keep him. Glad I did...sometimes... And "Time Waits For No Woman" was a risk - messing around with another fanfic writer's characters and 'verse. And "Times Have Changed" - people get very protective over Romana, and I'm not sure I'm very good at her... :/ Guess I learned that you've got to try new things every now and then, otherwise you end up just writing the same stuff over and over, and it gets too easy, and then it gets boring.

Do you have any fanfic goals?
Well, I started out wanting to twist people's feelings about known characters. Make them want to be afraid of Wilfred Mott, feel sorry for Abigail Naismith, feel sad for the Master and then hate him again. I still try to do that, but my goal now is to try and make someone really feel something about something I've written...I'm afraid I want to actually make someone cry. Not for the events that happen (so it's nothing to do with why I have an unfortunate tendency to kill characters), rather for how they happen and everything that's led to it. As far as I know, I've never done that. Oh, and I personally love finding a story that makes me cry - I see them as absolute gems of good writing, and I want to be able to do that - I'm not a horrible person, honestly! 0_0
2nd-Feb-2012 07:00 am (UTC)
Mine is pretty sparse, but more is on the way! http://kellerprocess.livejournal.com/1610.html

As for the questions (at least the ones that apply to me so far, as I've only written three fics):

What did you write that you would never have predicted?: Simm!Master as disability metaphor.

What’s your favorite story? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest: Cake.

Do you have any fanfic goals?

1. Write Doctor/Master until the sun burns out, or I die. Whichever comes first.
2. Write ALL the canonical D/M pairings (especially goosnake!/Eight. Because I'm sick.) Yes, even the minor ones.
3. Write huge 10/Simm! fic with partner.
4. Let Delgado!Master get the upper hand at least once.
5. That huge Simm!/Every Doctor orgy fic. Because of reasons.
6. A choose your own adventure/dating Sim(m) fic. ;)

Aha sorry, that was a fashion show link, what I meant to say is: "Thanks, I've added you to the index!"
