A Cosmos Without Doctor/Master Scarcely Bears Thinking About
So when does Paul Cornell get to write a canon Master story?
20th-Feb-2009 09:10 pm
I'm usually shy about starting threads, but any conformation that we aren't delusional is a good thing, y/y?

The insane level of Doctor/Master in Scream of the Shalka was totally intentional.

Just ask Paul Cornell.

I am dying over here. Not that I didn't think this was the case before, but it's just nice to hear him say it.

It's nice to get concrete translation of such subtle subtext. I think that maybe I can start to love this Paul Cornell guy, just for being so up front about this.

Well, I already owe him my soul after crying my guts out at Fathers Day. This is just icing on the awesome-cake for me.

Best cure for the blues ever! Oh Paul Cornell, how I love you. (Though this does make me even more disappointed that he's not replacing RTD.)

Me too. He would've been way better than Moffat :(

That was pretty much my expression all evening yesterday. :)

My Paul Cornell love didn't need to grow, as it is big enough already, but this is a nice additional reason for it.*g*

I think I'm gonna start worship Cornell!
And damn, when I watched Scream of the Shalka there was a brief moment of "You're fool, RTD, why didn't you let REG to be Nine!". I wish Scream of Shalka was made a few years earlier, maybe we'd get a few audioplays...

HA! I was just about to come over here and post this, but you beat me to it! It's something that, yeah, we all already knew, but it was wonderful to hear him actually say, "Yeah, they were at it, definitely." OH I KIND OF LOVE HIM REALLY HARD.

Bless 'im. And you all for bringing the good bits to the masses.

Also I find your icon shamefully adorable. Did you make those?

Indeed I did. I'm working on a Pertwee now.

(Subtext, though? I thought Shalka!Doctor/Master was text! ;-)

I had a chat with Paul Cornell about this at a Big Finish Day convention! (He was super nice!) I asked him, "So, in Scream of the Shalka... is the Master basically just a really sophisticated sexbot?"

We had a laugh about the whole thing and he admitted that he adores that intrepretation, but it wasn't intentional when he wrote it. The infamous voicemail message was meant to be between the Doctor and his previous female companion. If you read the novel version, that's explicit, and Cornell describes the Doctor as "asexual" in his author's notes.

Still, when he realised that people were interpreting the characters as being in a relationship, Cornell just rolled with it and has been quite vocal about his love for the Doctor/Master pairing ever since. He also told me he was really happy with the android boyfriend reference in the 2013 Christmas episode.

Also, he wrote a novel ("Happy Endings") in which Mike Yates ends up with a guy. :D

Getting an e-mail notification on this post was a trip. How on EARTH did you end up here, anon, all of five years later?

Oh, wait, I think I know. Hang on.

*rummages around on the internet for a bit*

Yes, I think I know how you got here. Your handle wouldn't happen to be Solle, would it?

(And the android BF line made me quite happy too. Though it raises all sorts of questions about if the Doctor has memories from alternate timelines. I wouldn't put it past him.)
